Rehabilitation programs

Rehabilitation programs:

Medical rehabilitation at the Institute Igalo is based on a team work and individually tailored rehabilitation programs specifically in the following fields:

Rehabilitation programs

  • Rheumatological rehabilitation

Rheumatological rehabilitation deals with degenerative rheumatic diseases, inflammatory rheumatism and non-articular rheumatism.

    Degenerative rheumatic diseases

Degenerative rheumatic diseases include arthrosis of peripheral joints and spinal column as the most frequent diseases in aged people.

Multidisciplinary team approach in creation of rehabilitation program tailored to patients and their needs is aimed to relieve or reduce pain, increase joint mobility, strengthen weakened muscles, with the final goal to enable the best possible performance in activities of daily living (ADL) and to prevent disability. Therapy modalities are different: indoor or water exercises, peloid applications, mineral baths, massage, electrotherapy, ultrasound therapy, magnetotherapy, laser therapy...

Rehabilitation of patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases

Rehabilitation of patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases implies primarily treatment of rheumatoid arthritis - RA, ankilosyng spondylitis - SA, psoriatic arthritis-PsA, as well as metabolic arthropathies, with gout as the most frequent disease.

The Institute Igalo has been successfully provided a complex and functional treatment of such patients for more than 40 years. The treatment includes balneotherapy (mineral water in bathtubs and therapy pools, peloid), individual and/or group indoor and water exercises, occupational therapy, dosed aerob training program, manual massages, ultrasound therapy, magnetotherapy, laser therapy, electrotherapy. An optimum duration of treatment is 3 weeks.

    Non-articular rheumatism

Rehabilitation program for the patients with non-articular rheumatism is intended for the following diseases: enthesopathy, bursitis, tendinitis, fibromyalgia, miofascial pain syndrome.

Individual therapy approach with the use of balneo therapy, individual/group exercises in the gyms and heated mineral water pools, massage (manual, underwater, reflex) ultrasound, electrotherapy, magnetotherapy, laser therapy, education of patients. Optimum duration of the program is 2 – 3 weeks.

  • Cardiac rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation of patients after myocardial infarction, with stable angina pectoris, after heart surgeries (stent implantation, coronary bypass, heart valve surgeries...) and high blood pressure.

Team approach (specialists in physical and rehabilitative medicine, cardiologists, clinical psychologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists specialized in cardiology, nurses trained to provide non-invasive diagnostic procedures of rehabilitation and specialists in other medical fields) has a key role in creating rehabilitation programs, which are conducted through strictly dosed physical activities (interval training on threadmill or bicycle, walking, swimming, muscle exercises monitored by purposely educated staff).

Anti-stress program – psychosocial adaptation and behevioral consultation, education with respect to nourishment and other risk factors (smoking, poor physical activities, alcohol) make an integral part of the cardiac rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy modalities applied – hydrotherapy, kinesitherapy, electrotherapy, manual massage, lymphatic drainage.

  • Respiratory rehabilitation

Respiratory rehabilitation of patients with: chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), asthma, after lung surgeries, restrictive pulmonary diseases, expressive thoracicl deformities.

Through an individualized approach to each patient, and under participation of a multidisciplinary team (specialist in physical and rehabilitative medicine, pulmonologist, cardiologist, clinical psychologist, nutritionist, specialized physiotherapists and nurses), a complex rehabilitation program is created at the Institute Igalo, to include not only the physical, but also psychologica, emotional and social aspect of the disease.

Physical therapy procedures include: respiratory kinesitherapy, interval training, inhalations, various drainage techniques, swimming, manual massage, energy preservation techniques and relaxation methods.

  • Neurologic rehabilitation

Rehabilitation of patients after stroke, head, brain and spinal cord injuries (quadriplegia, paraplegia), after neurosurgical operations, in demyelinating diseases (multiple sclerosis…), central and peripheral motor neuron diseases has been performed at the Institute Igalo for over 60 years.

The aim of the rehabilitation is, through individual approach to each patient and under participation of a multidisciplinary team, to achieve a maximum functional ability of patients in activities of daily living (ADL), and in accordance with their physiological limitations.

A complex rehabilitation program includes kinesytherapy, occupational therapy, logopedic and psychological treatment, electrotherapy procedures and hydrotherapy.

  • Sport injury rehabilitation

Sports injuries hold a high position in the order of injury frequency in the today’s world. in order to reduce their frequency, of great importance are both the prevention and the procedure following immediately after injury. In their nature, such injuries are most often light ones, but their rehabilitation is specific, and based on application of kinesitherapy exercises, functional training, hydrotherapy, peloidotherapy, mechanotherapy (manual massage, lymphatic drainage, reflex massage) and electrotherapy, which are performed by the therapists specialized in such therapies, and under supervision of medical specialists, with the aim of a full recovery and return to an active sports life.

  • Rehabilitation of the locomotor system

Rehabilitation of patients after bone and muscle system surgeries, after endoprothesis implantation (hips, knees, shoulders)...

Rehabilitation program is performed through individual kinesithepy exercises, with the aim to restore lost range of motion, muscle strength and coordination, either in hall, or in swimming pool, accompanied by the use of balneological therapy procedures, manual massage and electrotherapy.

  • Children’s rehabilitation

Children’s rehabilitation has been designed to satisfy polyvalent and interdisciplinary needs in rehabilitation of children, from birth until the age of 16 years.

The program is created by a multidisciplinary team (physiatrist specializing in children’s pathology, pediatrician, defectologist, speech therapist, psychologist, nurse, therapists), through an individual approach and with an active participation of parents.

    Indications for rehabilitation are:

    • congenital anomalies and deformities of locomotor apparatus
    • locomotor apparatus injuries
    • peripheral and central nervous system lesions
    • rheumatological diseases in remission phases
    • acquired spinal deformities and growth diseases
    • respiratory diseases
    • delayed psychomotor development
    • conditions after hip surgeries (due to congenital hip dysplasia, epiphysiolysis, Perthes disease)
    • birth injuries (torticollis, brachial plexus lesions)

Therapy program includes: kinesitherapy (individual or group), hydrokinesitherapy in the swimming pool or Hubbard bathtub, manual massage, pearl bath, peloidotherapy, paraffin, occupational therapy, logopedic treatment.
